August marks the final month of summer term in Madison. While that may conjure feelings of both excitement and nervousness, don’t forget that summer isn’t over yet. There’s still plenty of time to enjoy the weather, explore the city, and make new experiences. Check out this bucket list of things to do in the final month of #UWSummer.
See the Terrace After Dark
The Terrace is a great spot to relax during the day, but once the sun falls, it really begins to heat up. With free concerts, movie screenings, and open mic nights, along with a beautiful view of the lake at night, you can’t miss the Terrace After Dark.
Get on (or in) the water
Don’t just stay on the shore this summer. Outdoor UW offers kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals so you can enjoy the weather and explore Lake Mendota. When you’re done, why not take a swim at the Terrace? Be sure to pay attention to safe swimming tips from UHS. (Psst: Make sure you check the UHS
website to be sure the water is safe for swimming.)
Smell the roses at the garden
You’ve probably walked past this campus gem, but have you explored it? Stop by and see a wide variety of beautiful plants and flowers in the peaceful Allen Centennial Garden.
Explore the Henry Vilas Zoo
Where else can you see such a wide variety of exotic and interesting animals for free? With over 650 animals, The Henry Vilas Zoo is a great way to spend a summer day.
Hike out to Picnic Point
Picnic Point is a Madison staple, and you can’t miss the opportunity to hike or bike out there this summer. It’s a perfect way to escape the city and experience some nature.
Get Fresh Food at the Farmers’ Market
Saturday on the Square, located on the grounds surrounding the capitol, runs every Saturday until November 16. Stop by and get delicious, fresh produce from local vendors.
Relax with Outdoor Yoga
Outdoor yoga is the perfect way to relax while enjoying the weather. University Recreation & Wellbeing and Outdoor UW have teamed up to offer Weekday Terrace Yoga, Alumni Park Yoga, and even stand-up paddleboard yoga! You can also check out more group fitness classes offered by Rec Well.
Be one with nature at the Arboretum
The Arboretum, just a few miles south of campus, features over 1,000 acres of beautiful nature. Explore prairies, woodlands, wetlands, savannas, springs, and more on over 20 miles of walking trails.
Rent a BCycle
This summer, Madison BCycle outfitted its bike racks with brand new electric bikes. Rent one and explore the city on the many different bike paths. UW students can also purchase a BCycle annual pass for just $30!
Explore Beyond Campus
There’s a lot to see in Madison beyond campus, and summer’s the perfect time to explore. Use your ASM bus pass to get anywhere in the metro area. Check out James Madison Park, tour the Capitol building, go to a Madison Mallards game, and explore the beautiful city that we live in.
