Identity and Inclusion
Gabriel (Gabe) C. Javier is originally from St. Louis, MO and is the son of immigrants from the Philippines. His Catholic Jesuit upbringing served as the basis for the critical engagement of social justice that he now attempts to practice each day.
Gabe attended Rockhurst University, in Kansas City, MO, where he studied English, Communication, and Non-Profit Management. Gabe attended the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor for his Master’s in Higher Education where he then became a professional administrator, working for seven years at the institution. While there he worked for the Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC), training peer facilitators and reaching out to men as allies against sexual violence. After working at SAPAC, Gabe served as the senior assistant director of the Spectrum Center, the nation’s first student services office established to serve lesbian and gay students.
While at Michigan, Gabe served as the Chair of Administration for the Standing Committee for LGBT Issues of ACPA: College Student Educators International. Gabe was also elected as co-chair of the National Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals and asked to co-chair the National Conference on LGBT Equality: Creating Change 2008 held in Detroit, MI.
Since 2017, Gabe served as the assistant dean of students and director of the Multicultural Student Center, and from 2011-2017, was the assistant dean of students and director of the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center. He has been a part of implementing a university-wide system by which people can indicate a preferred name that may be different than their birth or legal name. Since arriving on campus in 2011, Gabe has delivered hundreds of trainings and consultations to faculty, staff, students, and community members on topics of cultural capacity building. He has been the instructor of record in courses in the Department of Counseling Psychology, School of Human Ecology, and the DELTA program.
Gabe’s research interests include: the effects of social media on the developmental growth related to coming out, the construction and assessment of Safe Space/AllyTraining programs, and the lives of LGBTQ+ people at the intersection of multiple identities. Gabe’s personal interests include cooking shows, travel adventures with his friends, sailing on Lake Mendota, and long walks with his terrier mix, Dino.
