Biography
Karen serves in a dual appointment as interim associate vice chancellor for student affairs, leading the Identity and Inclusion area, as well as assistant dean of the College of Letters & Science and director of the L&S Center for Academic Excellence (CAE). She joined the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2019 as director of pre-college programs in the Wisconsin School of Business. Her role was expanded to include the development and oversight of academic success initiatives in 2020. She assumed leadership of CAE in 2022.
Prior to UW–Madison, Karen was director of college counseling at Georgetown Day School, the first racially integrated school in Washington, D.C., and dean of admissions at George Washington University. She has served in various admissions leadership roles at University of Maryland, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, and Syracuse University.
Active throughout the higher education profession, Karen has served on the governing board of the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC); as a member of the board of advisors of the George Washington University online high school; on the faculty of the Summer Institute of the Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling (PCACAC); on the Middle States Regional Council of the College Board; and as a reviewer for the Gates Millennium Scholarship.
Karen is a first-generation college graduate from Goucher College (Maryland) and earned her master’s degree from Syracuse University (New York). She is an alum of the Harvard Summer Institute on College Admissions and an active member of the Madison alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
