Help Shape a More Connected UW | Join the Council for Community and Connection
How can we create a campus where every student feels connected, supported, and a deep sense of belonging? Join the new Council for Community and Connection and help shape that vision.
The Council for Community and Connection is a student leadership and learning community dedicated to strengthening belonging, meaningful relationships, and engagement across differences at UW–Madison.
Led by Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Dr. Fernie Rodriguez and Senior Advisor Dr. Ulrich Rosenhagen, the council brings together students with diverse perspectives, experiences, and viewpoints to explore one important question:
How can we create a more connected and less lonely campus?
Together, council members work alongside Student Affairs leadership to address challenges such as loneliness, isolation, belonging, and division. Through meaningful conversations, collaborative learning, and a student-led funded project, members develop skills in leadership, problem-solving, dialogue, and working across differences.
In a time when many interactions happen through screens, we’re creating space for something different: real conversations, meaningful relationships, and genuine connection. The council is an opportunity to step outside your usual circles, broaden your perspective, and help build a campus where everyone feels they belong.
We’re not looking for perfect leaders. We’re looking for students who are curious, open-minded, and willing to engage with people they might not otherwise meet. Students who want to hone their skills navigating difference and are willing to stay at the table to find common ground.
If you’re interested in building connections, exploring new perspectives, and helping shape a stronger campus community, we’d love to have you join the conversation.
As a member, you will:
- Advise Student Affairs leadership on issues that matter to you and your peers.
- Collaborate with students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
- Develop leadership, communication, and dialogue skills you can carry beyond college.
- Help design and implement a funded campus initiative focused on strengthening connection and belonging.
- Build relationships with students you may not otherwise meet.
- Commit to attending regular, bimonthly meetings throughout the year.
The council’s meeting dates are Fridays from 1-2:15 p.m. on October 9, October 23, November 6, November 20, and December 4. Please plan for some preparation time before each meeting.
Thank you for helping us to help create a more connected, engaged, and welcoming UW–Madison.
