The Final Stretch: Your Guide to Finishing the Semester Strong

By Mia McCauley, Student Affairs Intern

As the fall semester begins to close out, temperatures start to drop, and finals fill the calendar, remember to take care of yourself and each other. While our campus transforms into a winter wonderland, let’s do our best to stay focused and enjoy these last weeks as we #FinishStrong.

Here are some tips and strategies to power you to the finish line:

Study smart, stress less

Mental health matters: Resources are available

  • If you need assistance, there is support for both basic needs and mental health. When faced with a challenging situation and you are not sure where to go for help, look to the Office of Student Assistance and Support. Staff will help you connect with further resources and services.
  • Let’s Talk, through University Health Services (UHS), offers no-cost, informal, and confidential consultations on campus and virtually. In-person sessions are first come first served and range from 20-25 minutes, now until December 20.
  • UHS Mental Health Services partners with Uwill to expand access to flexible, no-cost, virtual counseling options. Licensed medical professionals are available for video, phone, chat, and message sessions, during flexible hours—including nights and weekends. Sign up with Uwill.
  • UHS and Recreation & Wellbeing partner with Togetherall to provide an online, anonymous peer-support tool available for free to our students. Whether you’re struggling to cope, feeling low, or just need a place to talk, Togetherall can help you explore your feelings in a safe supportive environment.
  • The Healthy Minds App, created by the Center for Healthy Minds, offers free tools like mindfulness lessons, and podcasts for everyday life skills.

Take a break

  • Remember, it’s okay and necessary to take time to unwind. Find time to pause and enjoy the last moments of this semester. Relax and recharge by spending time outside, listening to music, getting extra sleep, or spending time with friends and loved ones who help you be your best.
  • Looking for a study break? Choose your top UW-Madison Study Spot with our bracket filter on TikTok
  • December 12-19 is Self-care Week at Recreation and Wellbeing. Enjoy free group fitness classes, guided meditation classes, and more. Walk-ins welcome.
  • Wisconsin Union has free events like bowling, art, and ceramic classes, and even video and board game breaks—all to help you re-energize and de-stress. Additionally, be sure to check out the Union South Reflection Rooms for a space to find your peace amid the chaos of finals.

As you embark on this final stretch, remember to prioritize your well-being alongside your academic goals. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished and utilize the extensive campus resources to help you #FinishStrong.
