At UW–Madison, being the first in your family to attend college is more than a personal achievement—it’s a legacy in the making. That’s why the university proudly celebrates National First-Generation Day, honoring the resilience and determination of students who are blazing new trails in higher education.
The celebration begins on Thursday, November 6, with the third annual “I’m the First” event hosted by the Multicultural Student Center (MSC). From 5 to 8 p.m., the MSC transforms into a lively hub of games, laughter, and connection. Students gather to compete in large-scale tournaments featuring Lotería, Dominoes, and Mario Kart, all while enjoying crafts, food, desserts, and exciting giveaways. It’s a night designed not just for fun, but for building community among those who share the unique experience of being first-generation college students.
The festivities continue on Friday, November 7, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. in Library Mall. Grab a donut from Greenbush Bakery, play some yard games like cornhole and frisbee, get some first-gen swag, and learn more about first-gen resources on campus. Later that same day, join the Office of Inclusion Education from 2 – 4 p.m. with a National First-Gen Day Celebration Reception. This time offers a more reflective space to honor the first-gen journey. Students are invited to take free professional headshots, contribute to a communal art project, and enjoy appetizers while attending presentations that spotlight their stories and successes.
With nearly one in five undergraduate students at UW–Madison identifying as first-generation, these events are more than just celebrations—they’re affirmations of belonging. Through First-Generation Badgers, the university continues to connect students with resources, support, and a vibrant network of peers who understand what it means to be the first.
