Multicultural Student Center celebrates 50 years of the Multicultural Council (MCC) Grant

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the chancellor-funded Multicultural Council (MCC) Grant, and last month, the Multicultural Student Center (MSC) hosted a celebration to mark the milestone with campus friends and partners.

MSC Director Claudia Guzmán spoke, followed by Organizational Development Specialist Kiki McCance and Multicultural Council Grant Specialist Kristen Acuña-Huete. After dinner, Associate Vice Chancellor Gabe Javier and Director of the Multicultural Center within the Wisconsin School of Business Arturo “Tito” Diaz spoke, and afterward, several student organizations performed cultural dances, including Alpha Kappa Delta Phi, Dancas Dance Crew, Lambda Phi Epsilon, and VIVID Dance Crew.

More about the Multicultural Council Grant

The MCC Grant, composed of active members of other MSC-affiliated student orgs, meets biweekly to evaluate applications and host hearings for the MCC Grant, which provides funding to student orgs for events that celebrate multiculturalism. The grant was established to increase the number of events that represent the cultures of students of color and provide opportunities for leadership roles for students of color.

The MCC Grant also helps to increase opportunities for education, leadership, and community development available to the campus community, and is  intended to lift some of the stress of fundraising for student orgs, and  allow them to focus on reaching students and promoting culture. The MCC Grant allocates up to $30,000 annually to support these organizations and the MSC.

There is still time to apply for the MCC Grant for 2023. Grant applications remains open until April, or until funds run out.

“For the past 50 years, the Multicultural Council Grant has provided funding that enables student orgs to create community and celebrate students of color. I’ve seen the growth of the grant and demand for funding as we’ve navigated the pandemic restrictions and the increased need for community.” — Multicultural Council Grant Specialist Kristen Acuña-Huete
