Convocation, defined as a formal gathering of people, often for a specific purpose, kicks off the celebration of a new academic year. Here at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, this annual ceremony represents an official welcome to campus for new and transfer students alike.
Hosted on September 2 in the Kohl Center, the Fall 2025 New Student Convocation features speeches from Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin, Interim Provost John Zumbrunnen, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Lori Reesor, and Professor Percival Matthews, special advisor on access and community. Most importantly, this event reflects UW–Madison’s commitment to academic excellence and community involvement.
This year, Convocation features remarks from Heewone Lim, a Madison native and current senior majoring in Journalism, with certificates in political science and folklore.

Having spent the last three years navigating both campus life and academic challenges, Lim offers perspectives shaped by first-hand experience, making her insight valuable to incoming students.
“UW–Madison is a place where academic curiosity is fostered,” said Lim. “Students are encouraged to go deeper into their subjects, be open-minded, and say yes to the new opportunities surrounding them.”
Through showcasing the possibilities of involvement on campus, Convocation helps students understand how to make the most of their time at UW–Madison, in and out of the classroom.
“I think that UW has given me many experiences that I would not have had at other institutions,” said Lim. Despite it being a large university, the supportive community guarantees that students will feel at home, no matter where they are coming from.”
Whether it’s learning about specialized campus resources and academic advising, or joining new peers in singing the traditional ‘Varsity’ song, Convocation brings students together as they embark on the first step of their Madison journey.
“You only have four years on campus, which may feel long, but it flies by,” said Lim. “Make the most of every moment, starting with Convocation.”
