As the fall semester unfolds in Madison, there are many reasons to celebrate. New classes, new friends, and new opportunities for learning.
This year, from September 15 to October 15, the campus community will have a chance to celebrate and learn about the interrelation of cultures across Latin America and the United States through Latine Heritage Month.
Hosted by the Latine Cultural Center and the Latine Heritage Month Planning Committee, this series of festivities aims to create spaces that honor the stories, traditions, and resilience of Latin American communities, serving as a testament to the beauty of unidade (“unity” in Portuguese).
Amor Sin Fronteras (“Love Without Borders” in Spanish) is the theme for this year and serves as a reminder that Latine heritage is more than just history—it’s a community built on living stories and the boundless spirit of love.
LHM 2025 graphic artist, Esmeralda Albino, explains the design as a reflection of being open to one another as a community, despite differences or obstacles. “In my design, I reflected the ambiance of a little village united by a bridge. This demonstrates how love can unite despite challenges, destroying any border that is placed by this world. To show cultural resilience, I decided to add a trail of monarch butterflies representing families that migrate for a better future. This art serves to show that one of our biggest gifts as leaders is our ancestors’ unbreakable spirit for the better.”

Despite times of uncertainty, Latine people remain resilient, triumphant, and joyful. Kalani-Rodriguez Jimenez, LHM 2025 chair, reminds Latine students that despite having a smaller community, there are people they can turn to—not just for support, but also celebration.
The month kicks off with the annual March Up Bascom, where the campus is invited to march up the Hill. Many students carry flags from Puerto Rico and Latin American countries. “I think March Up Bascom is one of the events I am most excited for, ” said LHM Planning Committee member Jaen Muñoz. “It’s one of the most important events because it is truly out in public, which makes people aware of our presence and impact.”
Another highlight includes the event with artist and entrepreneur, Vic Garcia, “Creativity Without Borders: A Conversation with Vic Garcia Keynote.” Garcia is known for his vibrant character-driven artwork, good energy, and overall inclusive and community-centered mindset. He also has notable clients such as Bad Bunny, Pharrell Williams, Lebron James, and more.
“During this month, I hope students take away the power of community—what we can accomplish when we come together with dedication and passion”, said Social Justice Sub Committee Lead, Waleska Catañeda Martinez. “I’m incredibly proud of our committee for putting in so much time and effort. Despite the challenges we faced, we’ve worked hard to make this a meaningful experience for all students. I want everyone to feel the presence and strength of our community and walk away proud of their identity.”
“Amor Sin Fronteras amplifies the diversity within Latine cultures and allows individuals to share their stories in connection with the community. Help us celebrate Latine voices with joy, power, and pride. (LHM UW-Madison)
